HBO Orchid Culture Method

To grow orchids in an optimal manner the following five aspects of orchid culture are among the most important:

Light: Certainly one of the keys to successful orchid culture is providing adequate light levels. Most orchids will grow best at high levels that do not result in burning of leaves.

Temperature and Humidity: The types of orchids we grow are fairly tolerant of a wide range of temperatures. However, maintaining night temperatures near 60-65 degrees with day temperatures 75-85 is the optimal range for many orchids. Maintaining a high level of humidity during the day with lower levels during the night will facilitate orchid growth without enhancing conditions favorable for the spread of harmful bacteria and fungus.

Potting Medium: Any of commonly used media will grow successfully.

Fertilizing: Any water-soluble fertilizer will successfully grow orchids. However, if you want plants that grow multiple leads, maximize the number of flowers, etc. using a urea free fertilizer will provide optimal results. We fertilize on a weekly basis using Dyna-Gro Grow 7-9-5 one week, followed by Follett's Orchid Best 10-4-4 the next week, and then the third week with Drammatic Organic Plant Food with Kelp 2-5-1. SuperThrive is added along with the fertilizer at the rate of one drop/gal. during the winter months, three drops/gal. during the fall, spring, and summer months.

Minimizing Pests: It is not a question of whether you will be faced with an infestation of aphids, scale, mealy bugs, mites etc., the question is when. The best way to avoid heavy infestation problems is to apply a mild insecticide at a regular frequency. We recommend using SunSpray Ultra-Fine Pesticidal Oil at rate of once every 3-4 weeks. Every third application substitute with Pure Neem Oil.
