HBO's Premium SuperGrow Orchid Potting Mix
After growing orchids for more than 25 years and trying virtually every growing media (i.e., fir bark, osmunda, tree fern, sphagnum moss, wool, etc.), Huntington Beach Orchids has developed our own mixture called HBO's Premium Super Grow Orchid Potting Mix. While many of the alternative media available are less expensive initially, we believe our mix in the long run will outlast many of the alternative media and provide superior orchid growing results.
HBO's Premium Super Grow Orchid Potting Mix consists of a mixture of coconut husk chips, tree fern fiber, perlite, and spherical porous shade pebbles (charcoal may be used instead in the fine mixture). Coconut husk chips are the primarily component of this mix and have the following benefits: 100% organic and made from a renewable resource - a by-product of the coconut harvest, holds moisture up to 7 times its weight, durable stable carbon source that can last up to five years, excellent cation exchange capacity, highly porous and provides excellent drainage, improves water and nutrients holding capacity, ideal pH - approximately 6.3, and reduces mold/fungus problems. The other components (tree fern fiber, perlite and spherical porous shade pebbles) are virtually non-degrading and assist in reducing compaction of the mix.
HBO's Premium Super Grow Orchid Potting Mix is available in two grades. Medium for most mature orchids and fine for seedlings and small rooted orchid species and hybrids. The mix is available in three quantities - 1.5 cubic foot box, 1 cubic foot box, and ½ cubic foot box. To determine how much potting mixture is needed, a 1 cubic foot box is sufficient to pot approximately 15 - 8" pots, or 20 - 7" pots, or 45 - 5" pots, or 60 - 4" pots.
